Hello and welcome back to a brand-new episode of News Bites!
I'm Paz Bueno.
And I'm Nancy Sun.
In today's news: Turning trash into clothes, and thousands of new microbes!
And in today's Tasty Tidbit...mail from under the sea.
Keep on listening to find out more!

From Trash to Jacket
Making just one piece of clothing (一件衣服) can use a lot of water, energy,
and material.
Sometimes, a simple T-shirt can take thousands of liters (幾千公升) of water
to make!
After we wear clothes, many of them are thrown away (被丟掉).
This creates a big problem for our planet.
But one company in Taiwan is trying to fix that by turning old clothes into
something new!
Nan Ya Plastics and The North Face are working together to recycle old fabric
and make new clothes.
Since 2022, they've used smart AI machines to find and sort old pieces of
fabric.
These machines can spot polyester (聚酯纖維) and turn it into strong, new
material called "Rscuw" fabric.
This special fabric (布料) is used to make ski jackets (滑雪外套) that are
both warm and eco-friendly.
Nan Ya says the machines can sort up to 1,500 kilograms of old clothes every
hour!
That helps stop more clothes from going to landfills (垃圾掩埋場) or being
burned.
Right now, about 85% of the world's old clothes are thrown away.
The North Face uses the recycled fabric to make jackets that are great for
cold weather and also good for the Earth.
Nan Ya says they recycle about 24,000 tons (兩萬四千公噸) of fabric every
year.
They collect fabric not just in Taiwan, but also in Japan and Vietnam.
By 2027, they hope to recycle even more-tens of thousands of tons!
They're also looking at ways to recycle old clothes that mix different
This project is a big step for a greener future in fashion.

Deep, Dark, and Full of Life!
The Mariana Trench (馬里亞納海溝) is the deepest part of the ocean.
It's about 11 kilometers down (11公里深)!
It's dark, cold, and has super high pressure
But even in this tough place (艱難的環境), life can still be found.
Scientists from China went on 33 deep-sea dives into the Mariana Trench.
They used a submarine called Fendouzhe to collect samples of water, mud, and
sea creatures.
These dives happened in 2021, but the results were just shared in a science
They found over 7,000 types of microbes (微生物), which are tiny living
things.
Almost 90% of them had never been seen before!
Some microbes were simple and tough, while others were flexible and could eat
many things to survive.
The team also saw 662 hadal amphipods (超深淵帶端足類), which are tiny
animals that move side to side.
And they even spotted the world's deepest-living fish, a snailfish (獅子魚)
called Pseudoliparis swirei (馬里亞納獅子魚)!
Each spot on the seafloor (海床) had different microbes, like neighborhoods
with their own special mix.
This discovery helps us learn more about how life survives in extreme places

Tasty Tidbit
In Japan, there's a special postbox under the sea near Susami Bay.
It's about ten meters deep, and divers can send waterproof postcards from it!
This underwater mailbox has become a fun tourist spot.
People from all over the world dive down just to mail a card.
It even holds a Guinness World Record for being the deepest underwater
postbox!
And there's also an underwater post office in Vanuatu, a small island country
in the Pacific Ocean.
It's inside a marine park near Hideaway Island, three meters deep.
Snorkelers and divers can post waterproof cards there.
If you can't dive down, staff will help you!
Postcards are not stamped with ink.
They get a special mark pressed into the card.
It's real mail, from under the sea!
