Taiwan Ranks 2nd Among Japanese Tourists' Favorite Summer Destination
Which country do Taiwanese tourists most like to travel?
Many would guess Japan.
And that's the correct answer! Over 3 million Taiwanese traveled to Japan in
2023.
But what about Japanese tourists?
Where do they most like to travel?
It turns out that Taiwan is one of their favorite travel destinations.
A while ago, a travel booking platform released the results of a survey
It's about this year's summer travel trends.
4000 Japanese tourists took part in the survey.
Taiwan was ranked the second most favorite travel destination.
Why do Japanese like travelling to Taiwan?
Well, there's the short flight distance.
Depending where in Japan they are, it can take as little as 90 minutes to 4
hours to get to Taiwan.
Another reason is the tastiness of Taiwanese delicacies (美食).
Xiaolongbao (小籠包) has always been a must-try food (必吃的) for Japanese
tourists.
Mango shaved ice (刨冰), dumplings, beef noodles and braised pork rice are
also very popular.
Taiwan also used to be a Japanese colony (殖民地).
So, lots of Japanese cultural elements (日本文化的元素) can be found around
the island.
That's another thing which attracts Japanese tourists.
It's a lucky draw organised by the government.
How does it work?
Well, Tourists apply (申請) before arriving in Taiwan.
Then they can participate in the lucky draw in the airport arrival terminals.
Winners receive a prize of 5,000 NT in the form of pre-paid cards like the
EasyCard (悠遊卡) or iPass (一卡通).
They can then use the cards during their trip in Taiwan.

Ancient Egyptians May Have Used Hydraulic Lift to Build the Pyramids
The ancient world has many wonders.
The pyramids of Egypt are one of them.
They are made from heavy stone blocks and are very big and tall.
Now, this might surprise you: No one knows exactly how the ancient Egyptians
built them.
We don't have any written records (歷史紀錄) to tell us how they were made.
And the stone blocks were cut so precisely (精確) that they fit together very
tightly.
It's a big mystery (謎團)!
Scholars (學者) have been debating (爭論) this topic for hundreds of years.
They came up with (想出來) different theories (理論), but none have been
proven (證明).
Some even think the pyramids were built by aliens (外星人)!
A study was published recently in a scientific journal.
A research team studied the Step Pyramid of Djoser
They came up with a theory.
They proposed (推測) that ancient Egyptians may have used a hydraulic system
(水力系統) to lift the stones.
First, the Egyptians built a dry moat (壕溝) surrounding the pyramid's
construction site.
Water was then guided to fill the moat.
The researchers also proposed the existence of a vertical shaft
The stones were placed on a platform (平台) and lifted with a pulley system
Water was added or drained (排掉) from the shaft to control the rising and
lowering of the platform.
But some researchers aren't convinced by this theory.
One of them is a geoarchaeologist (地質考古學家) from the University of
Cambridge.
She said there is evidence of ancient Egyptians using hydraulic technology
But she says there isn't any evidence that the system described in the study
existed.
She said ancient Egyptian texts (古代埃及文獻) don't mention this technology.
Another archaeologist (考古家) said there may have not have been enough water
in the region to maintain such a large hydraulic system.
Who knows?
We never truly know how the pyramids were built.

So, in today's News Bites:
Taiwanese tourists like to travel to Japan the most, with over 3 million

Interestingly, Taiwan is also a popular destination for Japanese tourists,
ranking second in a recent survey.
They're attracted by the short flight distance, delicious Taiwanese food,
among others.

No one truly knows how the pyramids of Egypt were built.
These massive structures are made from heavy stone blocks.
Scholars have proposed various theories, including a hydraulic lift.
But there isn't any evidence to support any of them.

And for today's Tasty Tidbit,
Have you dreamed about being immortal?
Immortal means to live forever.
Well, it seems quite impossible for many of us to be immortal.
But there is a type of jellyfish that's immortal.
It's called the "Immortal Jellyfish".
They are able to simply reset their bodies to return to an earlier stage of
development.
That's like your mum and dad deciding to suddenly become young again whenever
they want, as many times as they want.
What would you do if you woke up and realized you could be immortal?
