台灣冰淇淋店榮獲罕見獎項
An Ice Cream Shop in Taiwan Gets a Rare Award
In Taichung, there's an ice cream shop. It's gray and dark gray.
Hmmmm.... these aren't usual colors for an ice cream shop!
On the first floor, you can order ice cream for takeout (外帶).
There are six flavors (味道).
The flavors change all the time.
On the second floor, you can order a set (套餐).
A set!
Yes, the set has seven dishes.
But these aren't the usual kinds of dishes for an ice cream shop!
There's ice.
There are local Taiwanese ingredients (成分) like osmanthus (桂花) and
roselle (洛神花).
There are different temperatures (溫度).
Huh? Isn't ice cream just... cold?
Shhh! There's technology (科技)!
And each dish is very beautiful!
Making these dishes so they are just right takes a lot of thinking and
planning.
Sometimes the chef (廚師) has to put in more air bubbles (氣泡) to make an
ice cream crunchy (脆脆的).
He even has freezers with different temperatures for different ingredients!
He's really, really into ice and ice cream.
It all started with a kid who loved ice - and eating ice!
He loved the sweetness (甜味) of the ice from his family's ice machine
(製冰機).
He ate ice every day!
He tried putting different foods in the freezer to see how they tasted frozen.
He opened his ice cream shop in 2021.
His shop has been given a world-famous award (世界著名的獎項) for its high
quality (高品質).
It's the only ice cream shop in the world to get this award!
The chef still loves simple ices (清冰)!
He still eats ice every day!
His wish is simple.
他希望在他店裡吃飯的成年人,記得小時候第一次嚐到冰淇淋的味道。
He wants adults eating at his shop to remember their first taste of ice cream
when they were children.
It's getting cooler, but does anybody want some really great ice cream?
I do!

男孩上學困難重重,卻成為創業家
School Was Very Hard, But Boy Became Entrepreneur
Five years ago, a 9-year-old boy was having a very hard time at school.
Reading was hard!
Writing was hard!
Math was hard!
Then one day, he found lots of golf balls (高爾夫球) in a stream (溪流).
They were from nearby golf courses (高爾夫球場).
He washed them.
Then he sold them online for about 32 NT each.
He sold 2,000 golf balls in three days!
Did the boy take the money and spend it on candy?
Nope.
He bought a small boat to look for more balls.
He bought even more balls to sell.
He bought 2,000 golf balls for about 3,200 NT once.
Hmmmm... so his profit (利潤) was over 60,000 NT for those balls!
He paid his friends to wash golf balls.
He became an entrepreneur (創業家)!
He counted and weighed (秤重量) the balls to get them ready to sell.
Hmmmm... that sounds like math!
He started buying other things like cool old toys.
Then he learned about an auction (拍賣) website (網站).
His parents helped him open a store on the website.
He's good at finding things that people want to buy.
He bought a broken bike for about 200 NT.
He sold the bike parts for over 16,000 NT... in one day!
He also has auctions on livestreams (直播).
He can sell over 160,000 NT in merchandise (商品) in one hour then!
When the boy was 12, he made more money than his father!
He's 14 years old now.
Being an entrepreneur has made him good at reading and math.
He uses spreadsheets (試算表)!
He's also good at bargaining (討價還價).
男孩說他很高興,因為他發現了自己擅長什麼,而不是只注意於不擅長的事情。
The boy said he's happy because he found what he is good at instead of
focusing on what he is not good at.
Hmmm… finding what you're good at instead of thinking about what you're bad
at...
Hey, that's some good advice!

Tasty Tidbit
And in today's Tasty Tidbit...
What is the tallest grass in the world?
It's... bamboo! (竹子)
Bamboo can grow up to 120 centimeters a day!
The tallest kind can be up to 46 meters tall!
It takes only a year for it to reach its tallest height.
Bamboo doesn't need much water.
It can grow in the desert, where there is very little water.
Bamboo has many uses.
One billion people use it to make buildings.
We use bamboo to make chairs, tables, flower vases, charcoal (木炭), and
kendo swords (劍道劍).
We eat delicious bamboo shoots (竹筍).
We wrap (包裹?) bamboo leaves around sticky rice dumplings (粽子) and steam
(蒸的) them in bamboo baskets.
Best of all, bamboo is good at keeping carbon (碳).
Bamboo can help fight climate change (氣候變遷)!
